Hiring activity related to artificial intelligence increased by a CAGR of 67% in the medical device industry since 2020

The global medical device industry witnessed a 67% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to artificial intelligence since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 113% year-on-year in 2021 and by 30% year-on-year in 2022. 

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 39% share of the global medical device industry’s artificial intelligence-related new job postings since 2020.  

Computer and mathematical occupations drive artificial intelligence-related hiring activity  

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 39%, emerged as the top artificial intelligence-related job roles within the medical device industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 138% year-on-year in 2021 and by 48% year-on-year in 2022.  

Management occupations came in second with a share of 22%, with new job postings rising by 113% year-on-year in 2021 and by 65% year-on-year in 2022. 

The other prominent artificial intelligence roles include architecture and engineering occupations (9% share), and life, physical, and social science occupations (8% share).  

The top five companies in the medical device industry accounted for 30% of hiring activity  

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Thermo Fisher Scientific, Alcon, Illumina, Koninklijke Philips, and ResMed. Together they accounted for a combined share of 30% of all artificial intelligence-related new jobs in the medical device industry. 

Thermo Fisher Scientific posted 2,083 artificial intelligence-related jobs since 2020, followed by Alcon with 1,698 jobs, and Illumina with 1,697 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

New job postings by Thermo Fisher Scientific increased by 62% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 6% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Alcon increased by 42% in 2021 and decreased by 46% year-on-year in 2022.  

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 59% share of total new job postings since 2020  

The largest share of artificial intelligence-related new job postings in the medical device industry since 2020 was in the US with 59%, followed by India (9%) and Germany (4%). The share represented by the US decreased by one percentage point from 60% in 2021 to 59% in 2022.
